The approaching darkness of the winter solstice…
17/12/10 12:55
The darkness of the
days – delightfully increases… as my
beloved winter solstice approaches… and I
absolutely love the soft greyness that holds this
time of year, and the wonderful feeling of the season
that prevails, as ‘Old Man Winter’
settles in for the long winter nights…

I take tremendous pleasure in stoking the wood stove in my kitchen up to a warm, crackling glow, the rich smell of cherry wood, and the wisps of grey smoke that drift and curl past the window… and I notice, that the smoke nearly matches the colour of the heavy, leaden sky.

The sun, appearing as nothing but a vague, low, white orb - casts a hazy glow overhead… and I know in my bones, that it won’t be long, before the ground is covered in white… and even before the day could dim into evening, I excitedly see that my premonition has come true… and snow is falling… Mmm perfect…

So in anticipation of the rapidly approaching, frigid night, I brave the frosty cold and go outside, to fill the big, old, black caldron next to the stove, with kindling & enough logs to last through the night. The Christmas tree… aglow with tons of multicolored lights… adds that festive feel, and the smell of the fresh cut pine… emanates through the house. A pot of herb tea is staying piping hot in the old, pewter tea pot, on top of the woodstove… and I frequently top off my half a mug, as I work around… nice.

Philip 'the Piper' - finally comes home (he has a day job… thank God)… and after a good, hearty, home cooked meal… we settle in for the night, and bring out the instruments, fiddle, pipes, drum, whistle... you name it... and we pull two rockers up to the warm hearth, and somehow, magically, the night just disappears into the dark hours of the evening, as thought it traveled on Angel’s wings - made of music, conversation and song.
So tomorrow is another day… another super, busy day, knowing my schedule... but I’ll deal with the shopping, wrapping and all the batches of cookies I will bake…tomorrow... because tomorrow’s another day… and right now… this is just wayyyy too good - to want to do anything else… but play my fiddle by the fire, and enjoy the wonderful night... So if i'm not back here to blog again, before Season's Greeting - arrives... I'll wish everyone now - a very Merry Christmas... and a happy and healthy new year to come... with wishes that you can enjoy the good moments... cause that's what it's all about.
